PC Hardware problem?
I work on pc's a lot and just recently I wanted to go get a used PC from the local Good-Will computer works to find a part's only case.Well after looking through all the cases i saw a decent 1G soyo custom (generic) but it was in REALLY good shape the case was perfectly white, looked nice and the side access didnt have any screwes so i poped it open to get a glance inside, to my suprise the inside was 100% sparkling clean so i smelled for electrical damage (smoke burnt smell inside) it smelled fine no burnt smells at all, then i looked at all the capacitors none were swollen so i was really impressed. Next I took the PC with a power cable and plugged it in - powered, one beep and it was 35$ so i was really happy. I got it home and hooked it up to my monitor here and to my suprise it had Windows XP Pro installed and it booted fine, so i had it booted and running for 2 days when today i noticed a smokey smell coming out of the power supply just slightly and later on it got- Worse and then it locked up, so i tryed to reboot it and i didnt get any video or a beep but it powered on. sooo i was really mad and i took out that power supply then put in another one i had lying around and 100% problems fixed again it ran then i noticed the smell from ANOTHER power supply and then same problem, it froze and i rebooted only to find another dead computer that will power on butwont give video feed or beep. please help also to note, when i had opened it up and felt my RAM and processor there REALLY cool and so is the north bridge so im positive it's not a over heat problem, the powersupply has this mega cooling sink and fan and there cool all over UPDATE!, it has... rebooted I think it's a motherboard problem.....not sure tho

Cannot get rhiannon pc game to run?
Hi :) I'm somewhat tech savvy, but for the life of me I cannot figure this out! Rhiannon installed fine, but when I went to run it I got a message saying "This game required 3d acceleration, check your drivers, etc" And above where it shows dropdown menus showing the possible video cards they come up blank. I am running windows seven starter (ew) on an hp mini 311 netbook. I cannot fnd new drivers because I cannot find out what videocard I have, any info online is sketchy and unspecific. And when I tried Nvidias driver check thing, my computer blocked it and gave me no option to unblock! What could be the problem? Is my graphic card too bad or canit be fixed? Thanks!
Reinstalled Windows. Now games won't run.?
I recently reinstalled Windows, but now I have installed a few games that had no problems before -- Battlefield Vietnam, Worms World Party and Armageddon -- and they won't run. World Party just goes to an hourglass and then nothing. Vietnam immediately shuts down with a Windows error (that "send error report" window). How can I fix this? I have not installed any hardware I didn't have before and the only new softare I installed was McAfee Internet Security 8.0. Right... When I would try to run Armageddon, a pop-up window with some error 'Error at ... Memory could not be "read"' if that helps any.
Why is my PC game installing but not playing?
The game installs fine but when I go to play it, it just has a black screen and eventually I have to open task manager to terminate the program because it won't do anything. I had no trouble installing it, but it won't play.

How hard to build a gaming Pc?
I've always wanted to build my own gaming pc. I dont have much knowledge on how to do so but have heard it fairly easy with some commen sense and a screwdriver. Is it really that simple. The main reasons are that i feel like my options are limited on ps3 and have become kinda bored with it. Plus I have heard over all game play is way better and graphics etc can easily be changed out. Whats the pros and cons. I have only played Cod4 on pc, i loved it once i got the hang of using the keyboard an mouse. Any info is good info. thanks in advance.
Building Your Own PC?
I've wanted to build my own PC for a long time. Is there a place to go to get tech help on compatibility, troubleshooting, etc., if I (when I) run into trouble. It's gotta be more than simply buying the components and slapping together. I looked at Tech Depot & you can 'build your own' with their preconfigured systems. Is that a better way to go? wondering...
Gaming Computer not working help!?
So I think I downloaded a virus. I was watching a show and it told me to watch i have to download a flashplayer(BTW it wasn't porn). So I did (I am so dumb T_T) and it turned off my whole entire PC. I was so scared!. So I turned it back up it said that the startup won't load and it was trying to repair it. After it was done it said you have to restart your pc. But it gave me that same startup couldn't load and has to repair. So I put in my Windows 7 os disk. And when It was done with step 2 it told me to restart to finish the process. I did and it put me back to step 1 and start over. PLEASE I need your guys help!!!!! I spent 1 grand on this gaming computer. DO I REFORMAT HARRDRIVE help!!
New gaming PC under-performing, help!?
I recently bought a prebuilt PC from IBUYPOWER and it was put together quickly and sent quickly, much to my pleasure. My problem is that 9/10 times it performed worse than identical computers with much worse GPUs/CPUs. My computer specs are as follows: CASE (AZZA Solaris) CPU (AMD FX-8350 CPU (8x 4.00GHz/8MB L2 Cache))) GPU (AMD Radeon HD 7970 - 3GB - Single Card)) Mobo (Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3 -- AMD 970)) Primary HD (64 GB ADATA SP900 SSD - Single Drive)) Secondary HD (2 TB HARD DRIVE -- 64M Cache, 7200rpm, 6.0Gb/s - Single Drive)) <-bad idea as second PSU (650 Watt -- NZXT HALE82N-SI / 80+ Bronze)) RAM (8 GB [4 GB X2] DDR3-1600 Memory Module - G.Skill Ripjaws X)) Cooling (Corsair Hydro Series H60 Liquid CPU Cooling System) STATS: IDLE GPU: 34 C LOAD GPU: 80-90 C <-- the wiring job looks sloppy, and I'd like to redo it, but don't know where to start.. Is there a weak link here? Could something other than my CPU or GPU be bottlenecking me? I constantly perform 20 - 40 fps worse than my friend who has worse parts all at stock clocks. There are games that according to the recommended specs I should be able to play on ULTRA yet can't. Thanks so much if you could help! And also, Is there a good hardware troubleshooting guide out there? I'd send it back to IBUYPOWER but I'd get a 2 month wait and I'd have to pay for shipping. :[

New gaming pc keeps restarting?
Hi guys. today i assembled my new pc. i installed the o/s win7 64 bit downloaded my programs and some games. everything was going fine until i tried to play minecraft. the pc restarted. i tried to change settings, run with different compatibility and updated my gpu driver to no avail. i also updated java and allocated more ram. the problem also appears when i try games on steam such as portal and when i try to do a windows index, basically any strenuous activity restarts the pc. the specs are as follows. Win 7 64 bit. XFX radeon hd 6870 asus m5a99x evo 8gb corsair vengeance ddr3 ram 750 watt corsair psu caviar blue 500gb hdd no sdd generic liteon optical drive. the issues are not due to overheating as the components are all running within normal limits. i generated a system health report and the results were shockingly bad; almost every component was running very poorly. i really need help on this, thanks in advance

HELP! PC WON'T TURN ON!!?
this is my situation but it doesn't have a Solution "Computer turns on but nothing shows on screen. If your computer seems to be receiving power after turning it on but you don't see anything on your monitor, try these troubleshooting steps. In these situations, the power lights will stay on, you'll likely hear the fans inside your PC running, and you may or may not hear one or more beeps coming from the computer. This situation is probably the most common in my experience working with computers that won't start. Unfortunately it's also one of the most difficult to troubleshoot" it also had another error before the situation above after I removed the spare network card I installed after removing the network card I Started up the PC and everything worked so I played DJ MAX TRILOGY but i had to do something so i just left the game running in MISSION mode. then when i returned i press down to choose a mission , nothing the PC had froze. then the pc come to this error message: "ERROR 0191:SYSTEM SECURITY - INVALID REMOTE CHANGE REQUESTED ERROR 0186:SECURITY HARDWARE LOGIC CONTROLL ERROR ERROR SYSTEM HALTED" It sometimes works and continues on to windows xp but it eventually just freezes and comes back to the problem. PLEASE HELP!!!
PC Games says (application.exe) has encountered a problem and needs to close. How do i fix it?
My Tiger Woods PGA Tour '08 always says after it loads up the course and ready to start golfing says ...has encountered a problem and needs to close... and many other things have that problem too. I found on Yahoo! Answers someone said to... 1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel. 2. Click Appearance and Themes. 3. Click Display. 4. On the Settings tab, click Advanced. 5. On the Troubleshoot tab, move the Hardware acceleration slider control to the third position (from the left), and then click OK. 6. Click OK to close the Display Properties dialog box. After I did that, when I opened Tiger Woods '08 it said in a message... The game does not officially support this video card. You may experience graphical anomalies or performance problems while running the program...so i clicked ok and then it said... DirectX is reporting that there is not enough Video Memory to run the game. I got this game for Christmas and I am really angry that it is doing this. What should I do?
Yahoo Kudos game crashes?
I have a brand new laptop and do not have problems with other games. I just bought the Kudos game today...and it keeps crashing out. Of course I have NO idea how to actually ask someone at yahoo about this......and it reminds me NOT to buy from people you cannot talk to! So if anyone know who to contact, or thoughts about this I would be happy.

How hard is it to build a gaming pc?
I want to build my own gaming computer, I plan on saving up around $1,000-$1,500 for it. I have a good knowledge of computers, but I'm not a wiz with them, even though I love them and want to know more about how they work. How hard would it be for me to build a gaming pc from the ground-up with almost no hardware experience?

HEPL!!!! My PC wont open(please read)?
I bought a pc around Thanksgiving and I have had the same problem twice. I was either playing Skyrim or downloading a file and the program just stopped responding I turned off my PC by pressing the power button and it started blinking when I pressed it again it just shows the library folder and it's light colored and says it's not responding. I didn't have to put in my password or anything it just goes straight to that screen every time. So this time I pressed the button to send the PC into what I belive is sleep mode and I unplugged it from the power and waited a few minutes. Once I plugged the power back in and pressed the power button it seemed fine and was showing the HP logo but once the logo disappeared it goes to the same not responding library folder. I can still move my mouse but it does no good seeing as I can't click on anything. I don't know what to do this PC is fairly high end and was gaming just fine earlier today. I am extremely desperate and ANY suggestions are nice

Why do my PC games crash ? Read carefully before you answer..?
I am not new to computers and understand how stuff works, be it hardware or software. I have a custom built a desktop PC with Intel Core2 Duo processor with 2Ghz speed per core, Intel DG965RY board, Geforce 6600 graphics card, 2GB DDR-2 and 160GB of SATA hard drive. All this supported by a Windows XP Professional genuine edition with constant updates. Still most of the PC games do not work on my computer ! Now, I have tried all the basic troubleshooting like updating drivers, reinstalling the games, reinstalling the operating system, clearing offline files and cookies, defragmenting the hard disks everything. But the games keep failing to run. The error messages I get are difficult to understand. Sometimes, after a game hangs or crashes, I get a message referring to an address access failure. I believe this means there is an issue with something else. Could somebody help me understand the problem if not solve it completely ? The games I have frequent problems with are: Mafia, Specnaz, IGI-1 and 2, FarCry, Thief-2. Games that run without a problem: Max Payne, Tomb Raider, Return to Castle Wolfensteine, Pirates of the Caribbean, Chess Master, Hitman.

Help me choose the best parts to build a computer build?
Lately I have been thinking about building a computer rig. I decided to use a forum post to do so. 1. What is the purpose of the computer? (Note: If you are planning to say multimedia, you will have to be more specific as all types of systems are capable of doing that) Programming. - Visual Studio 2012, Microsoft Office 2012, Compiling, Graphics, Adobe Master's Collection ( Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Fireworks ). Very very little gaming will be done. This rig is not intended to be a gaming rig. 2. Are you open to alternate ideas/products giving similar better performance but offering more VFM / sellers? If not- why? Yes 3. What is your MAX budget? 3000 dollars 4. Planning to overclock? Maybe. I heard that overclocking on processors wear them down. Don't know if it's good to overclock. 5. Which OS are you planning to use? Windows 7 Professional 6. How much hard drive space is needed? 2 TB 7. What resolution will the screen run at & whats the size of the screen you want? If you already want have one and want to use it, mention its resolution and size. Screen resolution: 2560 x 1440 WQHD, 27 inch 8. How would you rate your hardware knowledge from the count of 1-10? (1 being the lowest, 5 being you are somewhat in sync with the current performers and 10 being the highest) 8 9. Have you ever built a desktop before or will this be done by an assembler? Done by an assembler 10. When are you planning to buy the system? 3 week 11. Are you one of the types looking out for "future proof" configurations? No 12. Are there going to be any components that you don't want to include in this new rig? If yes, do mention. i3 and i5 processors 13. Which city do you live in and are you open to buying from shops from other city/states? USA and want to buy parts in the USA

I recently downloaded the Spore Free Trial. I installed it and it said that I had to get Direct X 9 or something. So I installed that as well. Then when everything was all installed, I tried to play the game. I got an alert saying Error 1002 Direct X didn't work or something like that. Then I went out and bought the 10$ version to see if maybe it was the trial that was causing the errors. But no, I got the same error. So has anyone else found a solution to this problem??

I don't know how to do that) and I've used registry cleaners, I have updated all the drivers; the ram has been switched out many times and I've used virus scanners to clean out the computer. I have tried two different hard drives( one seemed to be broken, so I pulled it out). Lastly, I tried uninstalling games and re installing the os, because my father believed the games corrupted the registry, but just as I suspected: no success. Computer Very Slow? What is the best way to bring computer back as new?
All programs are dragging very slow (i.e. Internet, Word, Exel, etc.) My computer is approx. 2 1/2 years old. I am willing to erase everything on it, and start over. I do not mind backing up my files etc. I have deep scanned with new norton antivirus, ran up-to-date spyware programs, defraged hard drive, cleared temp internet files etc. Nothing has worked! I have an hp zx5000, intel pentium 4, 3.2 Ghz w/512MB and am running Windows XP Home w/Service Pack 2. I would appreciate if someone could give me some ideas as to what direction to take to solve this issue(in detail would be greatly appreciated). I do not want to replace my notebook, but I understand technology updates very often. With that being said, Is this computer still up to par with some of the mid-range notebooks today? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...
Why is there a box around cursor with certain games?
When I play certain Windows games I am seeing a box around my cursor which looks like another part of the screen is being drawn in that box and it flickers. I tried decreasing hardware acceleration in Display->Advanced Settings->Troubleshooting per a suggestion and that didn't help. Got dual Nvidia 7800GTXs in SLI mode with Windows XP SP 2. thx
Looking to buy a new laptop, are MacBooks really worth the money? Please read?
I'm looking for an unbiased opinion. I have used Windows computers all my life and all the ones I've had have given me nothing but problems. Tried Dell and HP, which most people say are pretty good companies. This last laptop I got it thinking it was a good deal (HP in case you were wondering). Also it was a business oriented PC and they told me these are the best to get since durability and support are pretty good for what I use them, which is basically school work and everyday browsing. The reviews on it were good, and the hardware seemed good to last for a while (Got it about 2 years ago, maybe less, can't really remember). But it has seriously given me nothing but problems. To start off, the HDD was broken right out of the box. Got a replacement and it seemed to run flawlessly after that until the warranty died. A few weeks later the battery died. Then the screen will sometimes go crazy, and the only fix I found was to smack it on the side. (Took it apart, checked all the connection, everything was good). I'm not epically savvy but I worked for a year as an intern with IT in high school, so I know basic computer repair and troubleshooting. Also, it gets insanely hot. The fans seem to be running ok, and I really don't do anything intensive on it so there really is no good reason for it to do that, I always make sure to have it on a surface where most computers wouldn't get hot. Another thing to take into account is that I live in a tiny place, and have no where to put a Desktop PC, I haven't owned one ever since I was 10. Also, I'm always traveling so I have to rely on laptops. Anyways I'm expecting to hopefully get some money soon, and was looking at getting a new laptop. I've really wanted an Apple computer, I've got friends who have some older and newer Macs. A friend of mine has had her Macbook for like 5 years and it still runs like it was just taken out of the box, and has never had to replace anything. But the price is what keeps me from getting it. I know that for the same price I can get a really nice PC to run (Quote from gamer friend: "OMG TEH BEST GAMES EVAR, FAKK MACS THEY SUCK). But the thing is, I don't play ANY games. I am a console gamer and have invested tons of money into my console that I don't really feel like switching over to my computer for that, and start at square one. I'm also a bit of an amateur photographer and I have a friend who is into graphic design and she said that a Mac would be the best option. Soooo, my question is. Would it be a good investment to shell out 1800 grand for a MacBook pro? Will it really outlast all the other computers I have owned? I know that upgrading them isn't a walk in the park, and I also know that most things Mac fans and selling points claim about them is completely false, or at best overrated. But is it really a good option in my case? Like I said, I don't do hardware intensive things like gaming or anything, so the subpar hardware doesn't bother me. I want a good, high quality computer that will last for a while, doing the things that I usually do, and with a good battery life and so on. Let me know what you think, Thanks TL;DR version: All my experiences with Windows based laptops have been really bad and I'm looking for a good quality computer to last me for a while. Something worth mentioning too is that I already own an iPad and an iPhone, and I am extremely satisfied with both, wouldn't switch back to android One final thing. Battery life is a huge deal to me, and most comparable laptops offer really poor battery life and after talking with reps, there really isn't any upgrades unless I get a hardcore PC MaX: Gaming is completely out of question. I don't care about PC gaming. Like I said, I have invested too much into my console and I am happy with it. I don't care how much better battlefield 3 or skyrim look on a computer because all I want is the experience, and I am very satisfied with what I have gaming wise.

What's the best laptop to get?
I have about a $2000 budget to spend, i plan on using it for some gaming, but my main concern is the day-to-day use and reliability. I know a descent amount about computers but im not going to reprogram or do anything major to it. I mainly want to know if I should get a Mac or a PC

Video Games have issues with my PC and its Graphics Card?
So I have two games on my PC and one is pretty old. I have a Pentium 4 HT dual core 2.8GHZ 512MB of RAM and the rest of the PC should be the defualt hardware for DX2300 microtower. I play Halo CE and Minecraft, but on occasion they crash randomly without warning. When Minecraft crashes I exit out of it through task manager and until i restart my PC It will say it has bad video card drivers. The only workaround is to right click my desktop and use the troubleshoot bar on the 3rd thing from the left. Then minecraft works fine. Halo however crashes and gives a STOP error code 0x0000008e. Minecraft is understandable, but Halo was made in 2001 for older PCs. The hard drive came out of a diffrent PC, but i have installed all the correct drivers on it from the proper websites. Usually the games work for a while and then they freeze and give a crash. Is something wrong with the drivers, the video card, or my PC in general? And does anyone know of a solution or fix I can try? 1 the games work until it crashes 2 its the graphics card that came with the motherboard 3 I can't buy anything because I'm not allowed to drive to the store or buy online.

WHICH of these two memory is best for gaming on windows xp 32bit?will it stop the crashes?
first off i've heard that 4gb of ram will show up as either 3.25 gb or so with windows xp 32 bit,or is it just a little bit more than 2? like 2.25 or something.....??? give opinions of these 2 shown in the links below: (no other reccomendations please,im trying to stick to a strict qualified vendors list an also save $) these are the 4gb sticks im likely to choose: http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=10009739&prodlist=celebros these are $3 less an only 2gb(not4) but are 1066 mhz insted of the 800 that the 4gb are: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231144 obviously the 4gb is good as their all the same price about, but is the 1066 vs 800 mhz speed on the two other 2gb sticks such a difference i should only get 2gb? again, the question comes up of how much of the 4gb ram can be read by windows xp 32 bit.if its over 3,the choice would lean towards teh 4gb,if its only barely only 2,the decision might lean towards the 2 gb pairs because their 1066 mhz not 800 I do NOT plan on upgrading to 64 bit windows im about to buy the 4gb unless you think the better performance would be the 1066 2gb sticks So my primary question is about the ram.im buying it because i foundout my current isint on the qualified vendor list.....think it will solve the problem shown below?i copied this question below from last week when i was troubleshooting before realizing i had incompatible ram: memorys not on the qualified vendor lis(qvl) for new motherboard but is that why im getting these display errors an almost immediate in-game crashes?i updated bios from cd,then windows update, then ive uninstalled direct x an nvdia drivers an registry files an reinstalled repeatedly so wtf i HAVE direct x 9.0c an n4 display drivers i dont understand only showing 1024 ram(2 X 512) Patriot Extreme Performance 2gb (2x1gb) 240-pin DDR2 SDRAM 800 mhz(pc2 6400) dual channel desktop memeory model PDC22G6400LLK reads as 512 an 512 I bought a new motherboard cuz i thought board was the problem.the new motherboard is asus m4n72-e an now the same dam problem an now i cant even run new games smooth is there anything to try? i was about to run the one stick atta time but if both slots show 512 by the batman games auto detect i dunno what to do.they''re in the right slots.i changed bios from auto detect which was 667 to 800 mhz an auto to 4-4-4-12 2.2v command rate 2t dunno if it'll cause problems or if thats how it should be left at settings wise should it?anything else needing to be adjusted in bios thoo? ganged memory didnt help either. by the way, memory IS labeled 1 gb each,IS in the correct yellow slots,an obviously they both work cuz im in windows,is it even possible they sent me 512 x2???? Why won't my new PC game run?
Command and Conquer Tiberium Wars... I just installed it and clicked to play it, and this message comes up: "Please make sure you have DirectX 9.0 or higher installed. Also verify that your video card meets the minimum requirements, and that you do not have hardware acceleration disabled in the display control panel." I just installed the DirectX 9.0, I made sure my hardware acceleration is enabled, and I have no idea how to check if my video card meets the requirements. If it's asking if I have the right OS and everything, that should all be in check because I'm running a compatible OS and with enough memory (the game installed fine so there's enough space) so what can I do to troubleshoot this? Thanks :)
PC: Build from scratch, or Buy from Dell?
I was interested in buying a new PC, however I am relatively familiar with hardware, i.e. I can take all the major components out of a working PC and reconnect them all to a proper configuration. However, I have never installed or uninstalled a power supply or any component on the motherboard itself. I have a good idea of how computers work and I can troubleshoot a little bit, for example I figured out I had a bad RAM stick and replaced it. Am I better off buying a PC from a major company, or can I build a comparable PC for much cheaper with relatively low risk factor? FYI the computer I am thinking about buying is a Dell Inspiron 570, and the aspect that made me consider building my own is that they offer to upgrade from Athlon II X2 to an X3 (triple core) for 80 dollars. Well the X3 processor only costs about 75 dollars by itself. Right now all i need is a decent rig for school stuff, music, and surfing the web, but in the future I want to be reasonably able to make upgrades for gaming. Here is the stats of the Inspiron I customized on the Dell site: PROCESSORAMD Athlon™ II X3 Processor 435 (2.9GHz, 1.5M, 3C) OPERATING SYSTEMGenuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64Bit, English MICROSOFT SOLUTIONSMicrosoft® Office Starter: reduced-functionality Word & Excel w/ ads. I also couldn't opt out of the McAfee or the DataSafe. I dont want to spend more than 500, but I also don't want to get ripped off by Dell. If I can build a comparable PC or a slightly better one for a lesser cost please let me know and give me a good idea of what I should be looking for in a motherboard. Thanks.

Trouble getting any sound from my pc?
I recently bought a PC. It had working sound and video but I thought I would buy it an audio and a graphics card.. everything installed fine and working fine for a while. One day I turn my PC on and the sound had all corrupt.. and says 'no audio device' everything labeled in 'sounds, video and game controllers'' have yellow exclamation marks. I tried re-installing the drivers.. seemed to go ok.. the pc is neither detecting my on-board sound OR my audio card.. it says (Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41) Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.) I honestly didn't do anything to either break or corrupt this it just happened over night when the computer was off. Was working fine before. This is seriously affecting me as I am a musician and rely on my audio devices to work.. but i don't know much about computers. Help?
PC restarts upon reaching Win XP splash screen?
I've done a little bit of browsing and found people with similar issues, but none that exactly match my situation, or come across any troubleshooting that allows me to solve the issue. Prior to my current problem, I had been experiencing an issue whereby my computer would simply shut off suddenly and without warning. This would typically happen while I was watching movies or playing games. Simply idling or web browsing would not cause this to happen. I assumed it was an issue with the power supply dying, and not being able to provide sufficient power for higher demand processes. However, I didn't have time to see if that was the real problem, as now my computer refuses to boot up. It gets as far as the flash screen, then it restarts. It does this continuously, even when I attempt to enter safe mode. It even does this when I attempt to boot from the windows CD. No matter what option I choose from the CD menu, it automatically restarts again. I have checked the system, and temperature isn't an issue. All peripherals check out as being alright. I have reset the CMOS, and the problem still persists. I did not add any new hardware before the problem occurred. My next course of action later today will be to pick up a new HDD and try a fresh install on that. I am skeptical that even this will work, do to the CD issue I mentioned earlier, and I am looking for suggestions as to what might have caused this problem. As stated before, choosing any option from the Windows CD causes the PC to immediately restart. Re-installing/Formatting do not seem to be an option because of this. Went to magorgeeks.com, and saw that one suggestion was to to a power-up with on stick of RAM at a time. Managed to get the PC to boot successfully. Turns out that 3 out of 4 of my RAM sticks were bad. Some luck, eh? Problem resolved; thank you for your contributions though!
Chronic CRC error problems; what's causing it?
I am aware that CRC errors can stem from bad/corrupted data, srcatched discs and improperly downloaded files. Here's the thing though, I've already confirmed several files and discs that I have that are in good working condition by using it on several other PCs. No problems with extraction and installation. However, when I use the same files and discs on my PC, there's always some kind of error, usually a CRC error that hinders installation of a program or game. My DVD drive is definitely not the problem since I transfered it to a different PC and it worked fine. Same w/ some of the downloaded files I got. Works elsewhere except on my PC. What in the world is causing this? If it were a hardware problem, which piece of hardware should I consider troubleshooting or replacing? I've already gone through the paces of trying to look for a software problem, but there doesn't seem to be a problem w/ my software. By the way, I have managed to install other programs w/o a hitch so could that rule out my SATA HD? I've also ruled out the cable since I've tried the same cable elsewhere. I'm thinking MoBo or RAM has a problem.
HELP! I'm starting college computer courses. PLEASE READ I CANT MESS THIS UP! What approach should I take?
I want education in 1. Home PC - repairs, secretarial, updating, troubleshooting, etc. 2.Creating Computer Software and games -Programming, altering, fixing, etc. 3. Creating Websites - I hope to run an online business (laws). I want as much knowledge as possible regarding computers (except external hardware) in my lifetime. However, I'm on my last opportunity to go back to college (basic generals completed) and I need to plan wisely. I have to work to pay for school since I don't have a degree and make little $ this is it. I need to know every single course/degree available and know how long it will take to complete, the job market, and how much that course could be expanded. I searched tons but since I can take online classes the possibilities seem endless. What courses/degrees do you recommend and it what order (jobs, completion time, common classes, degree expansion, etc.)? The more specific the better, TY, I can't screw this up I won't have the opportunity to go back for years.
Why has my computer's performance decreased?
OK Here is what's going on. I have this machine i built myself, Pentium 4 3.0 ghz cpu with 1.5 gb of ram. Graphics card has 256mb of ram also. The problem I have is that it seems to have slowed down some, like when multiple internet windows are open it redraws the screen in pieces... real slow like. My favorite game (Final Fantasy XI) wont even run smoothly anymore. It lags pretty bad. I have followed all of the normal steps I can think of to troubleshoot this thing. I have cleaned up the registry with that CCleaner thing, deleted all temporary files, made sure my CPU fan is dust-free, defragmented the hard drive, checked for viruses (Norton 2008 updated weekly), checked for spyware, and killed all processes running in the background. There hasn't been any major changes in the PC's hardware since I added 1gb of ram to it, but it ran beautifully for long after that. I have checked to make sure the RAM,CPU, and all connections are secure as well. Any help on where to start would be appreciated. Hard drive free space isnt an issue, I am using a 160gb drive; windows only uses 130 cuz I didn't put on the drive overlay before I installed windows... but anyway it has 87 GB free. Also the OS is Windows XP, it updates itself from microsoft regularly and I do Windows Update myself as well. More Info: After messing with it some this morning, I isolated one process that was hogging CPU usage; svchost.exe. I ended the process and the sound quit working (lol). I know thats a microsoft thing of some sort. I'm going to try updated sound drivers. When I ended the process, I tried the game without sound and it ran way better. But again, it didn't always used to be this way. Thanks again Yahoo! Community!

How does Windows 7 differ from Vista or Windows XP? Windows seven was release 8/31/2010. Some technology improvements in windows 7 over vista or XP are, Windows 7 perform better than Vista/XP and use fewer resources. Also it has engineered to make fewer reads and writes to the HDD and is ideal to be installed on SDD (Solid State Drive). Some improvements over Vista/XP includes: Task bar changes: - include Jump List, Aero Peek. Supports touch screen and Touch Pad multi-touch. Include Aero Snap and Aero Shake to manage Desktop Windows. Include Libraries to manage folders. Include XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC environment. Include Action Center to troubleshoot Windows. Include Home group to manage local network Windows RE already include in the Hard Drive among others new features. Windows 7 features include: Accessibility ,Action Center, Aero Audio, video Backup, Restore ,Bit Locker Calculator, Desktop Device, management DirectX 11, Email ,Gadgets, Games, Explorer ,Getting Started Home Group, Internet Explorer 8, Internet, TV Jump ,Lists Language packs ,Libraries Location-aware printing, Multiplayer games, Networking, Paint ,Parental Controls, Peek Performance improvements, Play To Power management , Ready Boost , Remote Desktop , Connection Remote, Media Streaming, Shake, Snap, Snipping, Tool ,Startup ,Repair, Sticky Notes, System Restore ,Tablet PC, User Account ,Control Windows ,Anytime Upgrade, Windows Connect Now, Windows Defender ,Windows Easy Transfer, Windows Experience, Index ,Windows Fax and Scan Windows ,Firewall, Windows Live, Essentials Windows Live ,Movie Maker ,Windows Live Photo Gallery ,Windows Media Center ,Windows Media Player 12, Windows Mobility Center , Windows Search ,Windows Taskbar , Windows Touch ,Windows Troubleshooting ,Windows Update ,Windows XP Mode and WordPad XPS Windows 7 prices include: Home Premium: $199.99, Professional:$299.99, Ultimate: $319.99 You would want to use as a home use Windows 7 Home Premium is recommended for you because There are a few different 0/S versions that are available for windows 7 platform. There’s: Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Enterprise (used in businesses mostly), and Ultimate. There is also 32bit and 64bit versions of each save home basic (I think). There are also some N versions. Also Microsoft is currently running a promotion on windows seven; Windows 7 Home Premium Family Pack: Purchase a Family Pack and upgrade three PCs to Windows 7 Home Premium for $149.99, a savings of over $200. Some thoughts I have on windows seven are Windows 7 is what Vista should have been; I'm disappointed we even have to pay for Win7, but it was necessary as Vista was terrible. I use Windows in a virtual machine, so I have to buy the retail disk, not get a OEM version. So you can see why I'm peeved a little. The fact that there are many different versions of Windows 7, why not include all on one disk? Surely the license code could be used to unlock further features. Need to upgrade to a better version of Windows for a project? No problem, just stick the one disk in and go for it, no need to buy another whole disk. Come on, save some gas and materials! (Yes I know about Windows upgrade anytime, by chance that is)I do like its ability to save a System Restore to DVD's or a hard drive, this is essential for everyone to do this once they get their machine tweaked the way they want before the first piece of malware hits. Microsoft should take a proactive position to push the PC vendors from installing all their bloat ware, trial ware etc., on new hardware. It really distracts from the conformity across all PC's and makes life generally hard for everyone. Not to mention slows down the computers performance drastically. Also the eye candy setting is set way to high, it should be set lower. Microsoft Security Essentials should be installed BY DEFAULT, a more clearer understanding given how and why it's important for users to do their Windows updates, instead of just clicking to ignore when the bubble pops up. Laptop users are especially vulnerable and getting a good connection is hard as well, they should be informed if their connection isn't strong enough or reliable enough for updates. How about a automatic update for Flash? Really how hard is that to do? Windows 7 is better, but it has to come a long way before Joe "I don't know nothing about computers" can use it without trouble. Mac's are better, but they are deceptive. They appear easier to use but they are not to newbies. The only good thing is they are safer online than Windows. I prefer windows sever over any other operating system. It's the most supported and just works while still allowing functionality. I've tried linux (briefly) and it could be very powerful if I knew more about it. Never tried a Mac since I don't have one but I'd assume it would work decently. There were no competitors that released a new OS system at the sam new OS system at the same time as windows 7. Apple released 10.6 around a year earlier and is releasing 10.7 this summer. Various Linux distributions came out at the same time as Windows 7, but they upgrade constantly. Microsoft has released their new Operating System (O/S) called Windows 7. Complete a 1-2 page research paper about Window 7 O/S discussing some of its new features, pricing, which version would a home user need to purchase and maybe why. Here are some questions to consider when writing your research paper: How does Windows 7 differ from Vista or Windows XP? What are some of the technology improvements in Windows 7 over Vista or XP? How many different O/S version will be available from the Windows 7 platform? (In the past we've had multiple operating system choices available to the end user) When will Windows 7 release or become available for purchase? Is Microsoft currently marketing Windows 7 or running promotions? Share your own thoughts about whether you like Windows 7. Is there a competitor releasing a new OS at the same time as Windows 7? Is there an O/S you prefer? How does Windows 7 compare to the Apple MAC operating system?
which memory is better? i wanna buy NOW TONIGHT?
first off i've heard that 4gb of ram will show up as either 3.25 gb or so with windows xp 32 bit,or is it just a little bit more than 2? like 2.25 or something.....??? give opinions of these 3 shown in the links below: (no other reccomendations please,im trying to stick to a strict qualified vendors list an also save $) these are the 4gb sticks im likely to choose: http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=10009739&prodlist=celebros these are $3 less an only 2gb(not4) but are 1066 mhz insted of the 800 that the 4gb are: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231144 these 2gb sticks shown below are the most expensive choice, ill probably rule these out unless you know something i dont: http://directron.com/khx8500d2k22gn.html obviously the 4gb is good as their all the same price about, but is the 1066 vs 800 mhz speed on the two other 2gb sticks such a difference i should only get 2gb? again, the question comes up of how much of the 4gb ram can be read by windows xp 32 bit.if its over 3,the choice would lean towards teh 4gb,if its only barely only 2,the decision might lean towards the 2 gb pairs because their 1066 mhz not 800 I do NOT plan on upgrading to 64 bit windows im about to buy the 4gb unless you think the better performance would be the 1066 2gb sticks So my primary question is about the ram.im buying it because i foundout my current isint on the qualified vendor list.....think it will solve the problem shown below?i copied this question below from last week when i was troubleshooting before realizing i had incompatible ram: memorys not on the qualified vendor lis(qvl) for new motherboard but is that why im getting these display errors an almost immediate in-game crashes?i updated bios from cd,then windows update, then ive uninstalled direct x an nvdia drivers an registry files an reinstalled repeatedly so wtf i HAVE direct x 9.0c an n4 display drivers i dont understand only showing 1024 ram(2 X 512) Patriot Extreme Performance 2gb (2x1gb) 240-pin DDR2 SDRAM 800 mhz(pc2 6400) dual channel desktop memeory model PDC22G6400LLK reads as 512 an 512 I bought a new motherboard cuz i thought board was the problem.the new motherboard is asus m4n72-e an now the same dam problem an now i cant even run new games smooth is there anything to try? i was about to run the one stick atta time but if both slots show 512 by the batman games auto detect i dunno what to do.they''re in the right slots.i changed bios from auto detect which was 667 to 800 mhz an auto to 4-4-4-12 2.2v command rate 2t dunno if it'll cause problems or if thats how it should be left at settings wise should it?anything else needing to be adjusted in bios thoo? ganged memory didnt help either. by the way, memory IS labeled 1 gb each,IS in the correct yellow slots,an obviously they both work cuz im in windows,is it even possible they sent me 512 x2???? More "A Network Cable is Unplugged" Errors!?
I have a desktop PC, Acer laptop, cable modem, and a Linksys wireless router (WRT54G). I connected all the hardware correctly to create a small home network. The wireless connection to my Acer laptop runs perfectly. Meanwhile, the PC connection to the router, via an Ethernet cable, has begun disconnecting, with the error message "a network cable is unpplugged" appearing in the Windows taskbar. Everything is plugged in and I've gone through several troubleshooting steps, including chaging Ethernet cables and configuring the network adaptor (10Mbps/Half-Duplex). Even more odd, I was playing a first person shooter game and once I exited the game, the network cable is unplugged message suddenly appeared. At the back of my PC, I unplugged the Ethernet cable, waited 5 secs, and then plugged it back in. The connection was re-established!! The network adaptor's lights started blinking again. Is it my PC's network adaptor or my router or my cables?? Thanks for your help!

What video card should I buy? - Newer computer games?
I'm looking to upgrade my computer to handle games such as Skyrim and Star Wars: The Old Republic, but I know woefully little about computer hardware, specs, and pretty much anything else besides how to plug the thing in. I started out with a PC from Cyberpower, which is a quad-core something like 8 G of Ram and a Nvidia GeForce 9500 video card, but it wasn't able to keep up with the more modern games. A friend of mine has nearly exactly the same setup, and, being a lot more competent at computers than I am, recommended an older card that he claims works wonders for him. He gets an average of 70+ FPS on Skyrim and SWTOR on max settings, while my 9500 had no more than 20 on SWTOR and even stuttered on low settings for Skyrim. The card he recommended was a Nvidia GeForce 520. Frankly, it didn't work. I installed drivers, troubleshoot programs where ever I could, and tried everything to match my system to mirror his, but it simply won't mirror his results. I've gotten no more than 30-40 FPS on SWTOR, which is an improvement, but far from ideal, and on Skyrim, while it says Medium is the ideal settings for my system, Medium is near unplayable from FPS issues. I wanted to know what video card fellow gamers, or anyone knowledgeable about it, really, would recommend. I don't have a huge budget, so anything under $150 would be preferable, and around $100 would be ideal. I understand that it probably limits the improvements to lower than I like, but you gotta make due with what you can. Any cards that are slightly above that would also be considered, and I'd appreciate any help. I'd hate to spend money on another card that ends up not solving my issue. P.S. - While the video card is out of date, and I don't know much about computer specs, I did have my system compared to the recommended for both games and excelled at every category besides the video card, so that's why I didn't mention that. As I said, I'm not too competent with computers, so if you could advise me on where to find the information that you want, I'd be happy to give it. ------- The power supply is 430 watts. -------- If I wanted to upgrade my power supply to suit the 6850, is there a certain one I should be looking for? Is there any other issues that I'd probably blow up my room discovering? Thanks for the help!

I've been getting this error for quite some time now, and I'm getting sick and tired of it! Seriously considering to turn it in to service. My computer is fairly new bought it less of a half year ago. it just sometimes happens, even when im not doing anything, for example: Whatching a movie. But especially when I play games, I know that it may come from high performance using, but now I can barely play skyrim on THE LOWEST SETTINGS! I used to be able to play it on All medium to High... AND the hardware acceleration is not an option because whenever I click the troubleshoot bar I can't click the change settings button ( It's grayed out ) And i've tried updating and downgrading my drivers, and driver software... Prosessor AMD A6-3410MX APU with Radeon HD Graphics Ram 6 GB HP Pavilion Dv7 Notebook PC! ( if you need further information if you think you know whats wrong, dont hesitate to ask for it! ) WILL SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!!
Fable Troubleshoot please help?
Okay....so I bought Fable TLC for my Windows 7 pc. The guy I bought it from says he has Windows 7 and it works just fine. But for some reason everytime it gets to the beginning scene, the screen turns black but you can still hear the music. I lowered resolution and this helped for a couple scenes before returning to the same problem. When I googled this, a website suggested I download a NVIDIA driver. Trying this, when it downloaded and tried to install it says "This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware." So now what? I am utterly lost and would really love to figure out how to make the game work rather than return it. Please help me out :) So I cannot download a graphic card software hmmm?? Well thank you!!

Some times it can hang 5 mins later 10mins or even 15mins but never goes more then 1 hr. The maximum uptime apparently is 1hr at most. same thing I have scan for virus, I did not install any new hardware since i brought my PC 3 years ago.
